Course Overview

Engineering Technology Management was created for students with an essential combination of core engineering, understanding the advancements of technologies and management abilities that are critical skill sets required in Industry.

Graduates will be crucial in managing, designing and controlling challenging projects and tasks such as innovative products, developing sustainable global systems, efficient processes, implementing Big Data and AI analytics and developing entrepreneurial skills such as creating new business models to support high-value manufacturing settings.  Engineering Technology Management graduates will develop the technical expertise of engineers combined with a comprehension of the business and industrial environment and the capacity to develop creative solutions.

This program was created in response to a market need for professional engineers who are also proficient in entrepreneurship and management.

Engineering Technology Management graduates are in high demand from employers for various positions across multiple Industries such as medical, pharmaceutical, aeronautical, automation, design, Agri and food etc.

What are the entry requirements?

Leaving Certificate

A minimum of two H5 and four O6/H7 grades in six Leaving Certificate subjects, including Mathematics and English or Irish

Mature Applicants

Candidates applying as mature applicants may be required to attend an interview and may be requested to take an aptitude test to prove their suitability for a place on this programme.

International Applicants

International applicants should apply directly to the International Office at TUS, allowing plenty of time for completing the visa process. Applications for September start should be made by 1st June at the latest to ensure visas are processed in time.   • Introduction To Engineering Management & Entrepreneurship

    Credits: 10

    This module introduces the learner to the fundamentals of Operations Management, Entrepreneurship, and innovation in an engineering context. The module aims to equip the learner with a knowledge base of company structures in industry, and the basic principles of operations management. The learner is exposed to the fundamentals of engineering operations management, which provides tools and techniques for understanding product and process design, together with the manufacturing process and requirements ensuring businesses work more successfully in terms of resources and processes. The learner is introduced to Innovation and Entrepreneurship, which is a common stream throughout subsequent modules in the course.

  • Mechanical Engineering Science

    Credits: 10

    To develop an understanding of the basic laws of physics and their application to engineering.

  • Mechanical CAD and Design

    Credits: 10

    Engineering Drawing is an essential communication technique for those involved in Engineering, the aim of this module is to give the student a comprehensive introduction to the standards used in the preparation of Engineering drawings. Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems are now the typical means by which Engineering drawings are produced, students will use 2D and 3D CAD software to prepare a portfolio of their work.

  • Introduction to Mechanical Engineering Maths

    Credits: 10

    Develop a recognition of the basics of engineering mathematics and use them to solve practical engineering problems.

  • Engineering Computing

    Credits: 5

    This module introduces the learner to ‘Microsoft Office 2016’ computing applications including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint, MS Access and MS Project. Learners will start with basic applications and then progress through to an advanced level. The learner will develop a knowledge of how to apply the software to useful engineering applications such as formal report writing (laboratory), charting engineering data, producing equations and creating a technical database.

  • Electrical Technology Fundamentals

    Credits: 5

    Develop a basic understanding and working knowledge of the fundamentals of electrical and electronic technology and their applications in engineering.

  • Production Technology

    Credits: 10

    This module aims to introduce the student to the fundamental production technologies for fabrication(i.e. stock materials through assembly to finished product) and manufacturing (i.e. raw material to finished product) process and provide students with the knowledge to select appropriate materials for manufacturing an engineering component or structure, with considerations to constraints and suitability of manufacturing process within specific industries (aviation, medical device, heavy industry). And also gives the students an understanding of production logistics and materials handling for the life cycle of an engineering component within specific industries.

    This module in Advanced Regulatory affairs aims to provide learners with a fundamental understanding of EU and international regulatory systems required for process engineering. The module will cover the role of regulatory affairs, classification, regulatory structure, and the impact of various submission pathways as they apply to medical devices, pharmaceutical, Biopharmaceutical and Food manufacture. This module will enhance a learner’s career in regulatory affairs by developing increasing levels of competence and professionalism by obtain a formal qualification in industry.

  • Management Principles

    Credits: 5

    To investigate the environmental context of management, to examine the theory supporting management practice and to explore key management functions and the skills needed for managerial success.

  • Quality Management Systems

    Credits: 5

    This module will facilitate an in-depth understanding of quality and quality management, from the various definitions of quality, through to the practical application of systems and processes to manage quality.

    The module will draw from International Standards for Quality Management, the teachings of the various quality Gurus, National and International Quality Awards, and self-assessments models.

    Learners will develop skills to become leaders and innovators in the application of Quality principles and techniques and develop as quality management professionals for senior roles in the service and manufacturing industry.

  • Mech Eng Maths & Programming

    Credits: 10

    Strengthen the knowledge of mathematical fundamentals with the aim of solving more complex practical Engineering maths problems. Develop programming, debugging and engineering computation skills using a simple programming software such as Visual Basic in Excel.

  • Product Innovation & Process Design 1

    Credits: 5

    This module introduces the learner to the tools and techniques required for new product development and for optimally and systematically designing a product and a process. The module will also introduce the learner to the Principles and Tools of Design thinking for Product and Process Innovation.

  • Fluid & Mechanics

    Credits: 10

    The aim of this module is to strengthen knowledge of engineering science fundamentals with the aim of solving complex practical problems.

  • Data Analysis

    Credits: 5

    This module in Data Analysis aims to provide learners with an introduction to the statistical principles used in data analytics and their application using a suitable statistical package required for use in engineering. The module will cover the role of basic statistical concepts while also introducing the handling of data. This module will enhance a learner’s career in data analytics by developing increasing levels of competence and professionalism by obtaining a formal qualification in industry.

  • Organisational Behaviour

    Credits: 5

    To provide learners with an introduction to the organisational setting and dynamic and examine the role of management as an integrating activity. To offer an integrated view embracing both theory and practice and cover the broad range of influences which drive organisational behaviour.

  • Lean, Six Sigma And Quality

    Credits: 5

    This module provides an introduction to methods, concepts, and theories associated with Lean manufacturing, Quality Management Systems (QMS) and Six Sigma.
    The aim of the module is to equip the student with the ability to select and implement a range of Lean based tools and techniques to improving operations within the firm and across the supply chain.
    Techniques such as Just in Time and Kanban, Total Quality management are explained.
    Decision-making and problem-solving tools such as control charts, process flow diagrams, Pareto charts, and fishbone charts are explained.
    Introduce Six Sigma mythology DMAIC.

  • Mech Eng Maths & Programming

    Credits: 10

  • Product Innovation & Process Design 2

    This module introduces the learner to the tools and techniques required for designing a product and a process, Design analysis, Machine design, Product and Process simulation methodology, Industry awareness.
    The module will also introduce the learner to Design thinking integration in Companies for generating Innovation in Product and Process Design.

  • Fluid & Mechanics

    Credits: 10

    The aim of this module is to strengthen knowledge of engeering science fundatmentals with the aim of solving complex practical problems.

  • Work Placement

    Credits: 30

    This module is the work placement element for candidates on the Level 7 Degree and Level 8 Honours Degree programmes in the Mechanical and Automobile Engineering Department. The aim of this module is to give learners the opportunity to apply the practical skills and theoretical knowledge that they have gained in previous stages of their programmes while being employed in a supervised professional engineering industry.
    The Engineering work placement is a semester-long work placement in an engineering organisation. During this time the learners will aim to transfer and build upon the knowledge, skills and competencies that they have gained in the previous stages of their programme. This enhanced learning will be used by candidates who are continuing onto a Level 8 programme.

  • Applied Product and Process Design

    Credits : 10

    This module allows the learner to develop their skills in product and process design by applying their knowledge to a real world, industry-based design problem. The module proceeds Work Placements, where the students may have secured a topic to apply their design knowledge to. The learner is given the opportunity to develop their communication skills through formal presentation and report writing to present project work.

  • Digital Acquisition

    Credits: 5

    This module aims to present a broad perspective of Industry 4.0, and the industrial application of
    Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, with the advancement of smart factories and smart manufacturing.
    To introduce the student to industrial sensors and their application in automation.
    To introduce the student to automatic identification and data capture (AIDC) technologies
    linked to production control and inventory.
    To introduce the student to material handling and transportation systems within a production environment.
    To introduce the student to Computer Aided Quality Controls

  • Mathematics and Statistics

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide a detailed and in-depth understanding of mathematical concepts, which will allow the learner to be able to apply this knowledge to solve practical and relevant process engineering problems.

  • Engineering Materials – Design and Characterization

    Credits: 5

    This module will give learners a detailed knowledge of the relationships between an engineering component structure/mechanics and materials properties. On the basis of these structure mechanics – material properties correlations, the learners will be equipped with tools of designing new products or systems using existing materials that will fulfil the prescribed functionality. They will get a detailed insight into current product/process design and materials properties and characterisation techniques which will form an integral part of the engineering design process.

  • Advanced Data Analysis

    This module in Data Analysis aims to provide learners with advanced knowledge in data analytics and the emerging range of systems for dealing with Big Data. This module will enhance a learner’s career in statistical data analytics by developing increasing levels of competence and professionalism by obtaining a formal qualification in industry.

  • Applied Process Improvement 1

    Credits: 10

    Lean Six Sigma Improvement Methodologies represents the drive of efforts in manufacturing and service organisations to improve, services, and processes. Six Sigma represents a new direction to quality and productivity improvement, but the tools and philosophy have been established in the fundamental principles of total quality and continuous improvement that have been in use for the past number of decades.

    The aim of this module is to give a broad overview of the tools and techniques that are used in Lean Six Sigma projects. This module will help the student develop a number of Professional Transferable Skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication (written and oral), entrepreneurship, networking and customer focus.

  • Process Control And Statistics

    Credits: 5

    This module aims to:

    1. To give the student a broad foundation in statistics so that the student has the necessary confidence and skills in descriptive statisticals to visualise and interpret data both manually and using statistical software.
    2. To introduce the student to the concept of Quality Science, to give the student a broad understanding of the Six Sigma methodology and its statistical techniques

  • Process operations Management 1

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide the learner with an introduction to engineering management concerned with company strategies and objectives. To evaluate product life cycle, process types, designs, layouts, process analysis while ascertaining a knowledge of current technologies and data processing used in the manufacturing A broad overview will be given of the tools and techniques that are used in the operations and manufacturing environment to ensuring that operations are efficient in terms of using as few resources as needed, and effective in terms of meeting customer requirements.
    This module will help the student develop a number of Professional Transferable Skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, entrepreneurship, and customer focus.

  • Engineering Project Management 1

    Credits: 5

    This module provides the learner with an introduction to formal project management methodologies and the project management environment. Utilising active learning strategies, the module develops the learner’s knowledge and skills in the various tools and techniques for effective project management outlined in the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). The module also provides a platform for the learner to investigate their own personality type, and to develop a deeper awareness of the effects of different personality types on the project team.
    This module also introduces the learner to situational project management through multiple choice questions, which are in line with the Project Management Institute (PMI) accreditation assessment method.

  • Dissertation

    Credits: 10

    This module aims to develop learners’ research skills and ability to work independently to produce a dissertation in accordance with pre-determined formats, standards and ethics. The topic selected must be directly relevant to the course of study being undertaken by the student and the dissertation is to provide an exhaustive, critical and in-depth analytical study of the specific area of interest.

  • Statistical Process Analysis

    The module builds on the Students foundation in statistics and builds confidence in statistical skills in order to, visualise and interpret inferential statistics, make good decisions from samples / populations, improve quality
    Continue exploring Quality Science, to give the student an understanding of the Six Sigma methodology, and to give the student a broad foundation in the statistical thinking that form the basis of the Six Sigma process.

  • Engineering Operations Management 2

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provided the learner with an introduction to engineering management concerned with forcasting of product, capacity planning, new product introduction, validation of a process, supply chain and change management in a manufacturing environment. The module will also give a broad overview of the qualit ymanagement systems, standards, compliance, auditing and regulator bodiese requirments and effects on a product and manufacturing environemnt.
    This module will help the student develop a number of Professional Transferable Skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, entrepreneurship, and customer focus.

  • Applied Project Management

    Credits: 10

    The module adopts both theoretical and active learning, where the learner completes a work based project. The learner applies analytical tools developed in the programme to make observations and critically analyse a project that is industrial in nature. The learner creates a formal project report utilising Advanced Word, Excel and MS Project and is provided with the opportunity to develop their presentation skills as they present work throughout the semester.
    This module aims to advance the learner’s transferrable skills, in order to prepare for employment, including creative problem solving, technical writing and presentation skills.

  • Dissertation

    Credits: 10

    This module aims to develop learners’ research skills and ability to work independently to produce a dissertation in accordance with pre-determined formats, standards and ethics.
