Course Overview

The interesting blend of both sports and business modules provides graduates with the skills, knowledge and competencies to work in either sport or business management, maximising employment opportunities. Students particularly enjoy the practical activities, learning through doing, which are central to the learning experience on this course. Develop your network of contacts through our professional links with various Sports Partnerships, the GAA, Camogie Association, FAI, Treaty United, Munster Rugby, Thomond Park Stadium and Sport Ireland. Take the opportunity to travel during your placement while working or studying in Ireland or overseas. Play sport and make new friends. This course has been designed for people with a passion for sport who would like to work in an exciting, dynamic and global industry. Learn about working with athletes and training for performance and health. Develop your leadership skills and gain an understanding of governance and sports development, marketing, sponsorship, finance, law, running events, economics, public relations and human resource management. The course will suit anyone with a passionate interest in sport and a flair for business and management. You don’t need to be an elite athlete; you just need a positive attitude, a willingness to work hard and the determination to succeed.

What are the entry requirements?

Leaving Certificate

A minimum of 2 H5 & 4 O6/H7 grades in six Leaving Certificate subjects, including Mathematics and English or Irish.

Mature Applicants

Candidates applying as mature applicants may be required to attend an interview and may be requested to take an aptitude test to prove their suitability for a place on this programme.

International Applicants

International applicants should apply directly to the International Office at TUS, allowing plenty of time for completing the visa process. Applications for September start should be made by 1st June at the latest to ensure visas are processed in time. You should familiarise yourself with visa processing times for your country of origin to ensure you make a timely application. Find out more here.

  • Anatomy & Physiology For Sport

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to introduce the learner to the fundamental concepts of human anatomy and the anatomical structures involved in human movement, as well as providing the learner with an understanding of their mechanics in production of functional and sporting activities.

  • Introduction To Coaching

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to introduce learners to the coaching process, paying close attention to the planning, delivering and reviewing of coaching sessions. The module focuses on coaching children, with child welfare and protection, and the appropriate actions when dealing with children being the cornerstones of this module

  • Learning Skills & IT

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to enable students develop an understanding of the importance of the various methods of communication, the impact these methods can have in their future careers and to develop skills to utilise such methods effectively
    The IT element of this module aims to provide the learner with the skills to effectively operate software packages and to adapt their capabilities to a sports context.

  • Management Principles

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide learners with a broad understanding of the nature and functions of management with particular reference to the sports industry. It introduces learners to key theories, concept and practices of effective management and to the national and international business environment.

  • Sports & Clubs Accounts

    The aim of this module is to introduce learners to the core principles of accounting and its application in the sports business and sports management industry

  • Strength & Conditioning for Health & Fitness

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to introduce the learner to the fundamental principals of strength and conditioning for developing health and fitness, as well as providing the student with the relevant knowledge and practical skills to aid in the planning, prescribing, delivery and evaluation of safe and relevant programmes to increase health and physical performance.

  • Marketing Principles

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to present the core principles of marketing so that learners have an understanding of the subject and can build on this knowledge.

  • Media Communications & Personal Development

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to enable students to develop an understanding of the importance of the various methods of communication, the impact theses methods can have in their future careers and develop the necessary skills to utilise these methods effectively.
    The IT element of this module aims to provide the learner with the skills to operate software packages effectively and to adapt their capabilities in a sports environment.

  • Movement Analysis

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to introduce the learner to the stages of motor and human development, with a focus on Fundamental Motor Skill and its importance for lifelong physical activity, sport and health

  • Nutrition

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide an overview of nutrition and the importance of food, energy and fluid balance in health, exercise and sport.

  • Principles of Financial Accounting

    Credits: 5

    Learners will be provided with the necessary knowledge, skills and competence to prepare the accounts and records that form part of the double entry system and to prepare and present the financial statements for organisation”s in accordance with current accounting principles and standards.

  • Sports Administration & Governance

    Credits: 5

    This module will provide an overview of sports provision in Ireland. The module will explore on a basic level who the main role players are within Irish Sports administration and Governance. This module will also examine the internal governance structures of sport organisations and in particular, the board/committee structures of local clubs. A range of key issues faced by boards/committees of sport organisations will be introduced and identify challenges that they face. Clarity of roles and responsibilities: board, committees, executive and volunteers will be addressed.

  • Business Technology & Interactive Applications

    Credits: 5

    Innovations in technology, with a particular focus on Information Systems and the Internet, have transformed how businesses operate; therefore, learners must understand the basic economic and business forces driving technology within an organisation. They must comprehend the value of information systems and the technology of the Internet, as well as the security and ethical implications of both. The module will also give learners an appreciation of digital multimedia technology and how it can be utilised effectively by organisations.

  • Decision Making Techniques

    Credits: 5

    This module introduces learners to the core principles of costing and budgeting and the application of these principles in making informed business decisions in the sports industry. Learners will also engage in active learning via the use of a widely recognised accounting software package, Sage Payroll.

  • Fundamentals of Business Law

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide learners with a knowledge and understanding of the legal environment in which business operates with focus on the sports sector. Learners will develop a broad understanding of the legal system and structures in addition to acquiring knowledge and understanding of selected ares of the law relevant to business operation. The module will enable learners to apply the relevant legal principles to business issues and liaise effective with legal advisors.

  • Fundamentals of Sports Events

    Credits: 5

    This module is designed to provide the theoretic background which will enable students to successfully plan and operate an event.

  • Leadership Psychology

    Credits: 5

    This module introduces learners to the process of developing leadership qualities. This will be done by introducing key concepts of sports and leadership psychology, with particular focus given to leadership, team work and team cohesion in the practical setting. The learner will also develop their leadership abilities by planning, implementing and reviewing coaching sessions with their peers.

  • Microeconomics for Sport

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide students of sport with the tools to aid analysis and decision-making. The basic theories and models of microeconomics will be introduced and related to the sporting environment.

  • Macroeconomics for Sport

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide students of sport with the tools to aid analysis and decision-making. The basic theories and models of macroeconomics will be introduced and related to the sporting environment.

  • Multi Sports Experience

    Credits: 5

    This module introduces learners to games and activities that could be used in sport, community and physical education contexts. Learners will examine principles of play, technical skills, tactical approaches, rules and safety considerations related to a selection of invasion games (e.g. Gaelic football, hurling, soccer, rugby, hockey and basketball), target games (golf, darts, archery, bowling), net games (e.g. badminton, tennis, volleyball), and striking and fielding games (e.g. cricket, rounders, baseball). Learners will adapt, modify and progress games to suit different participant groups, numbers and resource/equipment availability. Learners will also learn to develop their communication and instructional skills

  • Planning & Control Techniques

    Credits: 5

    This module introduces learners to the core principles of cash budgeting, planning and control and the application of these principles in making informed business decisions in the sports industry. Learners will engage in active learning via the use of a widely recognised accounting software package, Sage Accounts.

  • Practical Sports Events

    Credits: 5

    The student will have the opportunity to design, plan deliver and evaluate a practical sports events. Events which have been delivered by students in previous years include Guinness Book of World Records challenges, various sporting tournaments, community engagement projects and multi-code sports competitions.

  • Sport & Society

    Credits: 5

    This module examines the interaction of sport in society from social, political, cultural and economic perspectives. It examines how sport creates, challenges and reinforces norms, values and expectations in society and in communities. Learners will be required to engage critically with a number of substantive issues in sport, including the evolution of sport from past to present, the role of the media, gender, social class and racial relations, deviance and sport and political influences. The community will be a central theme throughout.

  • Web Design & Implementation For Sport

    Credits: 5

    This module has been developed to enable learners to keep pace with emerging demands for online business presence. During this module students will acquire the requisite skills to plan, develop and analyse an integrated digital presence for organisations in their industry. Furthermore, through this 100% CA based module, learners will have practical exposure to digital analytics.

  • Coaching Technologies

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to aid students to acquire the knowledge of the use of coaching technologies and how they relate to the ability to evaluate, monitor and enhance sporting performance. Students will learn and critique the role of technology in sport and apply key operational principles to a wide variety of sporting and health scenarios.

  • Community Health & Wellbeing

    Credits: 5

    This module serves as an introduction to health and wellbeing in our communities. It examines the determinants of health, and considers a variety of health promotion approaches to address health concerns, for communities and individuals. Case studies and best practice examples are presented, and learners have the opportunity to implement a health intervention in an appropriate setting.

  • Marketing Communications

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide an in-depth understanding of the marketing communication mix . There is a strong emphasis on digital marketing strategy, content, and campaigns and will be reviewed in the context of Sports Management

  • Quantitative Analysis

    Credits: 5

    This module will enable learners to obtain, analyse, illustrate and interpret quantitative data extracted from sports related problems. A learner will be able to infer results based on analysis of suitable samples. It will also allow the learner to investigate relationships between various sets of numerical data. Learners will also use quantitative techniques to assess the viability of alternative capital investments.

  • Sports Facilities Management

    Credits: 5

    This module is designed to enable the learner to effectively manage a sports enterprise or facility. It also enables the learner to maximise the commercial potential of a sports business.

  • Strategic Public Relations

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide the student with an understanding of the role strategic public relations in business in ensuring effective communication and promotion of the organisation”s messages to its various key stakeholders. The module will encompass a range of public relations aspects media relations, including crisis communication, developing suitable sponsorship partnerships, developing appropriate CSR programmes.

  • Work Placement/ Study Abroad

    Credits: 30

    This Work Placement/Study Abroad component is an integral part of all academic programmes of the Institute and is provided in compliance with HEA/DES requirements for practice-based learning on all third level courses as laid out in the “Higher Education System Performance Framework 2018-2020” . The overall aim of the module is to offer the student the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills gained throughout their course of study up to this point in a new and relevant experiential setting. This is to achieved whilst facilitating the student in developing the practical life-skill competencies and communication skills necessary to function as an effective member of the work environment and wider society. Students choosing to study abroad will be provided a comparable programme of study in an approved foreign partner Institution.

  • Entrepreneurship Business Plan

    Credits: 15

    The aim of this module is to introduce students to the entrepreneurial process and to equip them with the required skills to prepare a business plan relevant to the Sports industry. The module aims to consolidate learners” knowledge and skills in the Market Research, Marketing Strategy, Operations Management and Financial Accounting & Management acquired throughout their studies culminating with the preparation of a Business Plan.

  • Final Year Research Project

    Credits: 15

    The aim of this module is for the learner to conduct research on a topic of their choice and to use scientific research as a problem-solving tool. This module seeks the understanding and application of appropriate research designs, data analysis techniques, and report writing and presentation. The learner will be able to identify, understand and research complex specific problems of their topic using various research methods and tools.

  • Exercise for Special Populations

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide students a multi-disciplinary approach to dealing with the various needs of special population groups and how it impacts on physical activity. Students will develop the skills necessary to adapt various exercise programmes to meet the needs of specific special population groups.

  • Financial Management

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is for learners to appreciate the role that financial management plays in organisations and to apply the core concepts to help learners make strategic decisions which will allow them as managers to successfully manage and grow organisations. The module will allow learners to examine various capital investment appraisal techniques and through application, determine the viability of a new ventures of projects. This module will also enable learners to formulate and analyse financial projections for sports organisations and to evaluate short term and long term sources of finance.

  • People Management Concepts & Practice

    Credits: 5

    This module provides an introduction to the theory and practice of human resource management in the modern workplace and the current key issues and debates in the field. It addresses the conceptual frameworks and best practices that underpin people management and performance in organisations. It also provides an opportunity to develop and practice the skills and competencies of managing people,

  • Strategic Analysis

    The aim of this module is to provide students of sport with the tools to understand central issues, methods and concepts of strategic analysis and planning, thus allowing them to apply this understanding in analyses and discussions of cases.

  • Strategic Marketing for Sports

    Credits: 5

    This module adopts a broad approach to marketing, integrating the strategic and operational elements of the discipline as applied within the context of sports related organisations. Learners will consider all of the key market stakeholders, explore developing market relations and methods of enhancing customer value whist also analysing and reflecting on organisational competitive advantage and profitability.

  • Essentials of Organisational Behaviour

    Credits: 5

    This module uncovers the conceptual frameworks and theories that underpin workplace behaviour. It explores theories which underpin individual and group behaviours in a work context. Behavioural challenges encountered in the modern workplace are probed with emphasis on the psychological contract and the impact of culture, social and political issues on organisational performance.

  • Financial Analysis

    Credits: 5

    The aim of the module is to allow learners gain an appreciation of the importance of financial analysis and to adopt and apply various financial controls to aid in the strategic decision making function of sports organisations. This module will equip learners with the requisite tools to analyse a firms” financial performance, to successfully implement techniques to manage risk and to support organisations from a strategic and financial viewpoint with consideration for the current and historical performance of the organisation, including a focus on working capital management.

  • Strategic Management Practice

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide students of sport with the tools to understand central issues, methods and concepts of strategic management and planning, thus allowing them to apply this understanding in analyses and discussions of cases.

  • Workplace Health & Wellbeing

    Credits: 5

    This module considers the workplace as a setting for the promotion of positive physical, mental, social and emotional health. Students will examine the potential benefits of workplace health promotion to public, private, and community & voluntary sector organisations, as well as to paid and volunteer staff, including athletes and coaches in sports settings.

What can you do after this programme?

Graduates can expect to find work in a broad range of areas. Many continue in postgraduate education while others go on to find employment with national and multinational companies, national governing bodies, local sports partnerships, event management companies, professional clubs, sports agencies, accounting firms, insurance, financial institutions, consultancy firms, HRM roles, marketing roles, sales and business teaching. 

Successful graduates of this programme are eligible for Level 9 and 10 postgraduate programmes within TUS or elsewhere.
